Trip Interrupted

You may be wondering how my planned hospital stay went? You know, where I was supposed to get pumped full of ketamine for five days at a hospital in Philadelphia to treat my migraines? I’ve been talking it up for a bit, but it did not go as planned!

The IV control unit dosing out the ketamine.

The day before the hospital stay, I had a slight sore throat. Nothing serious, just a very mild irritation. When we checked into the hospital on September 11th, I mentioned my throat, and no one was particularly worried about it. So, I got in my hospital bed, they hooked me up to a PICC line, and they started a ketamine drip. I didn’t notice much, given the extremely low dose that they started with. As the night arrived, however, my throat became much more painful. And by the time the sun came back up, I had a fever of 102.4° F and an elevated heart rate. My doctors then tested me for Covid, flu, strep throat, and a few other things, but it all came back negative. Most likely it’s just a random virus. However, because ketamine can also raise your heart rate, they decided I should go home to recover and come back later. They pulled out the PICC line and sent me on my way.

Thankfully, after returning home, the fever wore off pretty quickly, but my throat is still not fully healed. Hopefully, I’ll be in better shape when I return Philly for round two in early November! As always, I’ll keep you posted…
