It’s been a great year for music. Well, for other people’s music, at least. I’m still working pretty slowly on my own material (though I’m enjoying my new Push 3). But a lot of great albums have come out in 2024!
Here are a few records that I’m thankful for, in no particular order:
Mannequin Pussy – I Got Heaven
These Philly punks have been at it a while, but they really went for it on this album. It’s solid from top to bottom, with a handful of singles worthy of FM radio play. I’ve probably listened to this album more than any of the others on this list.
Mk.gee – Two Star & the Dream Police
Everyone from Frank Ocean to Eric Clapton has taken notice of Mk.gee’s lo-fi neo-soul and super fluid guitar playing. The album is a whole vibe. He’s carved out a peculiar sound and style that likely won’t disappear soon.
Not for the faint of heart, this 4-song album is a brutal and unrelenting listen. The singer addresses his lifelong struggle with bulimia and body dysmorphia head on. It’s heavy and uncomfortable and unlike any other record I can recall.
Gillian Welch & David Rawlings – Woodland
Veterans of folky country music, these two know how to turn a phrase and pluck an acoustic guitar. They’ve sang & played on each others’ records for decades, but this is their first official release as a pair. A deeply enriching record that asks hard questions.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD
Has instrumental rock ever been this political? The band wrestles with the ongoing genocide in Gaza with heavy guitars, strings, and so much eloquence. Possibly their best effort of the past decade or so.
Stereolab-loving LA psychedelia. It’s a diverse and surprising album with loads of character. If you’re into far-out sounds and weirdly good times, this might be for you.
The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis – The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis
Fugazi’s rhythm section, virtuoso guitarist Anthony Pirog, and jazz heavy James Brandon Lewis made something really special with this one. It’s jazz/fusion that goes way out but still retains a sense of elegance and a good bit of fun. I never imagined Joe Lally & Brendan Canty would end up on Impulse! Records, but I’m sure glad it happened.

Of course, there were tons of other albums I loved this year too. Here are a few honorable mentions: LL Cool J – The Force (way better than it has any right to be), Kim Gordon – The Collective (noise rap par excellence), Combat – Stay Golden (goofy pop punk done right), Soccer Mommy – Evergreen (gorgeous and vibe-y singer/songwriter tunes), Mount Eerie – Night Palace (an epic, noisy, folky adventure from one of the greats), Justice – Hyperdrama (ridiculous, over-the-top dance music with lots of fun cameos), and Gustaf – Package Pt. 2 (raw post-punk from Brooklyn).
